50 Chinese Character Tattoos and Their Real Meanings (Checked by a Native Speaker)
Love, strength, peace, family, dragon, “be like water”: here are 50 Chinese tattoo words with the characters, the pinyin and what each one really says to a Chinese reader. No guesswork, no machine translation.
Save to PinterestA Chinese character tattoo is small, but people will be reading it for the rest of your life. Some of those readers will be native speakers. They will not see a nice shape. They will see a word, and they will know straight away if it is the word you meant.
Many lists of “Chinese symbols” give one English word and one character, and nothing else: no simplified or traditional form, no pronunciation, and no idea how the word feels to a Chinese reader. Two words can share a dictionary definition and still feel very different.
This list fixes that. Every word below was chosen by a native Chinese speaker for how Chinese people actually say it. For each one you get:
- The characters in simplified Chinese and, where it differs, traditional Chinese;
- Pinyin, the standard romanization, with tone marks;
- The literal meaning, plus a short note on how it reads to a native speaker.
How to read this list
Simplified or traditional? Chinese has two standard writing systems. Simplified characters are used in mainland China and Singapore; traditional characters are used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, and in older texts. Both are correct. Many words look identical in both systems. When they differ, you will see both forms below, simplified first. The one hard rule: never mix the two systems in one tattoo.
Pinyin. The little marks over the vowels are tones, and they are part of the spelling. They help you say the word and check it elsewhere.
One character or two? Many Chinese words are simply spelled with two characters. Personal peace is 平安, not either character alone. Where a single character works alone, the note says so.

Why some of these are not word-for-word translations
A few entries don't match the English word exactly, and that's deliberate. “Survivor” as 幸存者 reads like a news report, so the list uses the idiom 浴火重生. “Let it be” translated word by word is nonsense, so it uses 顺其自然. 命运 is fate in a heavy, unchangeable sense, so “destiny” is 缘, the bond between people. Each note explains the choice.
Before you book your appointment
- Pick one writing system (simplified or traditional) and keep the whole design in it.
- Bring a clean file, not a screenshot. Ask your artist not to redraw the characters freehand. One missing or extra stroke can turn a word into a different word, or into no word at all.
- Check the stencil before the needle. Make sure it is not mirrored or upside down on your skin.
- Think about size. A simple character like 力 stays readable even when small. Characters with many strokes, such as 衡 or traditional 龍, need more room so the lines don't blur together over time.
If you want to see how these words look in different lettering styles, Chinese Tattoo Ideas for Love, Strength and Peace compares brush, calligraphy, serif and bold versions.
Every word on this page is in the 50-design pack. You get simplified and traditional forms in four styles, transparent PNG and SVG files, mirrored stencil versions for transfer, and a PDF guide that includes the common-mistake note for each word. Send the file to your artist and you know exactly what ends up on your skin.
